Fire in coastal village in Philippines kills 12
MANILA » A huge fire fanned by strong winds from Manila Bay has swept through a congested village in the Philippine capital, killing 12 people and displacing nearly 2,000.
Fire officer Joselito Dugan says seven children were among those killed when the fire broke out late Saturday in San Roque village in Navotas city. He says the blaze burned for five hours and destroyed some 100 homes.
Dugan says investigators were working Sunday to determine the cause of the fire, which started as many residents were celebrating on the eve of an annual religious fiesta.
Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman says the 1,800 residents displaced by the fire are being given meals and shelter at a nearby school.
