The Mana Loa-Nimitz Lions Club and Radford High School will conduct a "Giving from the Heart Food Drive" Sunday through Feb. 16. People are asked to drop off canned food items at Radford High’s main office at 4361 Salt Lake Blvd. on school days from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tax-deductible monetary donations also are welcome. Enrollment begins for kindergarten

The state Department of Education is urging parents to register their children for kindergarten or junior kindergarten for the 2011-2012 school year.

Children who will be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1 may enroll in regular kindergarten, while those who reach 5 between Aug. 2 and Dec. 31 are eligible to enroll in junior kindergarten.

All parents are encouraged to register their children for the full-day classes at their neighborhood schools.

On Oahu, parents may call the district office starting Tuesday through Feb. 18. In the Maui district, parents are asked to call beginning this month. On Kauai, parents may call this month. On Hawaii island, parents should call at various dates in February and March. The district office has details.

Man pleads no contest in traffic death

A 42-year-old Hawaii Kai man who allegedly hit and killed a motorcyclist two years ago in Kaaawa will be sentenced April 27 in Circuit Court.

Troy Matsui pleaded no contest last week to a charge of third-degree negligent homicide stemming from a May 17, 2009, incident, the city prosecutor’s office said.

Police said Matsui was driving a 2003 Dodge Dakota pickup truck and was turning left into the Kaaawa 7-Eleven on Kamehameha Highway.

Police said Matsui turned in front of motorcyclist Mark Lamm, 49, who was thrown from the motorcycle along with his passenger, a 10-year-old girl. Lamm suffered critical injuries, including the amputation of his left leg, police said. He was taken to Castle Medical Center, where he died. The girl survived, but the extent of her injuries is unknown.

Anti-drug workshop set for Lihue

Kauai County’s Anti-Drug Office is sponsoring a free workshop Feb. 22 aimed at assisting local agencies and organizations in their alcohol and drug abuse prevention efforts.

The workshop, which will focus on management of assets and resources, is set from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lihue Civic Center, Moikeha Building, Meeting Room 1.

Funding for the training is provided through a Strategic Prevention Framework Incentive Grant the county received from the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration through the state Alcohol Drug Abuse Division.
