Sleepers open some eyes at Hannemann Jamboree

In 18 years of the Mufi Hannemann Jamboree, there have been former college stars and current prep phenoms on the hardwood.

There have also been little-known gems in the rough, shining against the state’s best hoopsters. One of them is Crystal Henry, a sophomore guard from Kauai, whose wickedly fast finishes in transition drew oohs and ahhs Saturday at Manoa Valley Recreation Center.

Hannemann, the tourney founder and former mayor, pointed to Henry, Erika Ellis of Lanakila Baptist and Carissa McBride of Leilehua as sleepers who made their marks at the event.

Henry, who helped Kauai to a 9-3 record this season, gets little exposure beyond the Garden Island. The Jamboree has become a way for underclassmen to showcase their talent for Hannemann and his Team Aloha staff. Each summer, the all-star team travels to the mainland for a tournament. Henry is on their radar now, though she hadn’t known much about Team Aloha before.

"Team Aloha? I’ve never heard of it," Henry said after the Jamboree. "Yeah, any way to get off Kauai to play basketball. It would be fun. I need to work on my jump shot, but everything else is good."

Other than that possibility, Henry plans to keep working on her game in the offseason. She spends her offseason playing in a community rec league in Lihue, along with pickup games against boys and men.

"Wherever there’s basketball, I’m playing," she said. "We came close to a championship. It was a good season. Kapaa played hard, we played hard. It was a fair win (by Kapaa). Next year, if we keep working, we can win champs."

In the Prep-Collegiate final, Kalei Adolpho scored 14 points and Kyla Evers added 12 in Team E’s 50-44 win over Team D.

The tournament, which included 14-under and 12-under mini-tournaments, was a chance for Adolpho, Molokai’s All-State post, to have some fun. Molokai lost in the Division II state tourney this week as Adolpho scored roughly 75 percent of her team’s points.

"We knew what we had coming into the season, missing a lot of key roles, but we worked hard and things just didn’t come together," said Adolpho, a 6-foot-1 senior who has signed to play for UH.

Former Rainbow Wahine guard Fran Villarmia, who coaches Team Aloha, could only dream.

"I wish we could clone her," Villarmia said.
