Hollywood companies seeking additional tax breaks in Hawaii for television and movie production in Hawaii rolled out some star power in testimony before two Senate panels today.

Actor Cuba Gooding Jr. testified about his time in Hawaii filming movies including “Outbreak” and “Pearl Harbor,” and urged lawmakers to approve the proposal that supporters said could lead to as many as 20 movies a year filmed in Hawaii.

The proposal would increase the film production tax credits from current levels, provide tax credits for new production facilities, rebates to help with a local crew training program and exemptions from hotel room taxes for productions longer than 30 days.

The Senate Committees on Economic Development and Technology and Tourism deferred action on the bill until Wednesday.

Senators had serious concerns that the bill had not been thoroughly vetted, noting drafting errors in the title and typos in some dates.

A House version of the bill was advanced out of committee last week.
