Louisiana Tech routed Hawaii 76-50 last night in the Rainbow Wahine basketball team’s regular-season road finale in Ruston, La.
Seventh-place UH (9-17, 3-10 WAC) couldn’t win for the fourth time in five games, instead falling to 1-2 on its final road trip before the WAC tournament next month. After snapping an 18-game WAC road losing streak at New Mexico State on Tuesday, UH settled for a 1-7 league road record.
The Rainbow Wahine fell 74-69 in overtime to the Techsters in Honolulu on Jan. 8, but this one wasn’t nearly as close.
"Our team, despite that we played hard tonight, we did not play to our potential," UH coach Dana Takahara-Dias said. "But we felt really good about this road trip, getting the first road win. We are not hanging our heads down."
The first-place Lady Techsters (19-5, 11-0) won their 12th straight game, thanks to 34 points off 28 Wahine turnovers. Six different Wahine had three or more giveaways as the hosts had 15 steals.
"They capitalized on our mistakes," Takahara-Dias said.
UH closed the first half on a 15-5 run and trailed 30-25 at halftime. But Louisiana Tech outscored the visitors 46-25 in the second half, thanks to 51.7 percent shooting in the period.
"I thought we played a solid first half. I thought we did a great job mixing up our defenses," Takahara-Dias said. "In the second half, Louisiana (Tech) just came out strong and many people hurt us."
Techsters forward Adrienne Johnson, the WAC’s leading scorer, met her average with 22 points and seven rebounds. Three other Louisiana Tech players scored in double figures.
UH was led by forward Kamilah Jackson, who notched 12 points and 10 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season, building on her UH freshman record.
The good news for UH: The team begins a three-game homestand Thursday against San Jose State.
