A 26-year-old Kahului man died of his injuries today after his car crashed into trees along Iao Valley Road Friday night, Maui police said.

Police identified the man as Beau Hiwatashi. He is the first traffic fatality on Maui this year compared to two at this time last year.

Hiwatashi drove a 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera off the road near Ua Place in Wailuku and collided with trees along the shoulder about 9:42 p.m., police said.

Paramedics took him to Maui Memorial Medical Center where he died. He appeared to have been wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
