Hawaii falls again at UC Irvine in volleyball


Jonas Umlauft put down 25 kills and Steven Hunt added 16 but Hawaii could not hold on as No. 7 UC Irvine rallied past the 10th-ranked Warriors 27-25, 20-25, 25-23, 28-26 tonight in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball match at the Bren Events Center. 

Joshua Walker added 14 kills for Hawaii (6-10, 4-7 MPSF) against the Anteaters (11-8, 8-5).

The Warriors outblocked the Anteaters 12-3.5 but UCI served tougher, with a 13-5 ace advantage. 

Hawaii had two set points in Set 1, the last at 24-23, but the Anteaters finished their 5-1 run with the 27-25 win.

The Warriors again led late in Sets 3 and 4 but couldn’t hold on,outscored 10-1 at the end of Set 3 and 7-3 at the end of Set 4. 

Hawaii returns home and hosts Pepperdine March 4 and 5 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
