The Hawaii men’s basketball team had its five-game winning streak snapped in its regular-season finale, 85-70 tonight against Fresno State at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif.

A flat first half cost the Rainbow Warriors the chance to head into the Western Athletic Conference tournament next week with serious momentum.

UH (18-11, 8-8 Western Athletic Conference) still receives the fifth seed and will face eighth-seeded San Jose State in the opening round on Wednesday.

Fresno State (14-16, 6-10) moved up to the seventh seed. FSU led by 18 points at halftime and fended off a Rainbow Warriors charge in the final minutes; UH got the deficit to 78-68 with just over a minute left, but got no closer.

FSU outrebounded UH 43-30 and shot 7-for-12 on 3-pointers, compared to 6-for-17 for the Rainbows. Neither team was accurate at the foul line, but Fresno’s massive edge in attempts added up. The hosts shot 26-for-42 at the stripe compared to UH’s 10-for-18.

Junior guard Zane Johnson led UH with 21 points on 8-for-14 shooting. His four 3-pointers raised his season total to 94, just three off from tying Michael Kuebler’s record 97. Senior forward Bill Amis added 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Sophomore forward Joston Thomas added 10 points and seven boards off the bench.

Sophomore center Greg Smith led the Bulldogs with 16 points and 16 rebounds.
