BYU’s Paige Affleck struck out 13 Hawaii hitters and the Cougars defeated the Rainbow Wahine softball team 4-0 today in the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament.

Affleck retired 12 consecutive UH hitters from the second to fifth innings and held the Rainbow Wahine to three hits. UH threatened in the first and sixth, but left the bases loaded both times.
UH sophomore Kaia Parnaby took the loss in a complete-game effort. She gave up seven hits and finished with seven strikeouts with one walk.
A two-out error extended BYU’s first inning and Jessica Purcell-Fitu gave the Cougars the lead with a two-run homer to center field.
BYU stretched the lead to 3-0 in the third. Lacey Millett reached on a passed ball on a swinging third strike. She stole second and third and scored on JC Clayton’s two-out single to left.
The Cougars added a run sixth and Affleck doused UH’s comeback hopes by striking out five of the last six hitters she faced.

UH was shutout again in its second game of the night, dropping a 1-0 decision in extra innings against Iona.

UH right-hander Stephanie Ricketts struck out a career-high 13 batters in a one-hit performance. But the Gaels scored the game’s lone run on a passed ball in the top of the ninth and the Wahine offense couldn’t answer against Iona’s Sarah Jackson.

The Wahine loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the eighth. But Jasey Jensen was forced out at the plate on a grounder to shortstop and Jackson struck out the next two hitters to extend the game.

With the international tiebreaker rule in effect, Iona’s Erin Kyle began the ninth inning on second and was sacrificed to third. She then scored on a passed ball. In the bottom of the inning, UH advanced Jenna Rodriguez to third but Jackson’s 13th strikeout and a ground out ended the game.

In the first game of the day, California’s Jolene Henderson threw a five-inning no-hitter in the Bears’ 9-0 win over Cleveland State. Henderson was one walk away from a perfect game and struck out four. Henderson also earned a complete-game win over BYU 4-2 in the second game.

UH closes the round-robin portion of the tournament against Cal on Friday at 5 p.m.
