Isle events address crisis in Japan

» The students of Hawaii Tokai International College will be putting on a flea market fundraiser at the college’s cafeteria from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and tomorrow. » A fast-paced Kettlebell-based workout is promised at the MOVE Fitness & Training Workout benefit at 9 a.m. tomorrow at Kapiolani Park, by the tennis courts. A $20 donation is suggested; write checks to Red Cross Japan Earthquake/Pacific Tsunami Fund. Call 397-3280.
» Suzuki Talent Education of Hawaii will present a concert at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Orvis Auditorium, University of Hawaii at Manoa. Sixty violinists, ranging in age from 4 to 18, will perform works from Bach and Vivaldi to "Star Wars." This is the finale concert of the "Suzuki Rocks!" violin camp. » The American Red Cross will accept monetary donations at a free concert at Windward Mall from 2:30 to 5 p.m. tomorrow. Performers include Hoku Zuttermeister, Ho’okena, Lehua Kalima of Na Leo, and Shawn Pimental. Call 489-5732.
» The weekly Hawaiian music series Pakele Live! with Tony Solis is hosting a monthlong series of benefit concerts to aid earthquake and tsunami victims. Concerts are held at 6 p.m. Thursdays through April 7 at the Willows Restaurant. Admission is free but donations are encouraged. Call 952-9200.

» Taste of Marukai, with specialty dishes by Nobu Waikiki, sake sampling, live entertainment and more will be held 6 to 9 p.m. April 7 at Marukai Wholesale Mart, 2310 Kamehameha Highway. Tickets are $95, or $85 if purchased by tomorrow. Proceeds will benefit the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, Honolulu Chamber of Commerce, Honolulu Japanese Junior Chamber of Commerce and Hawaii United Okinawa Association, with donations accepted for the Aloha for Japan Fund. » The group Aloha Moms is organizing the Keiki Walk for Japan to benefit American Red Cross relief efforts at 8:30 a.m. April 9 at the Mililani High School track. » Tickets are on sale for the "Kokua for Japan" fundraiser to be held April 10, at the Great Lawn of the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort and Spa. Performers include Henry Kapono with special guests Michael McDonald and Mick Fleetwood, the Brothers Cazimero, Kalapana, Cecilio and Kompany, Amy Hanaiali’i, Na Leo, John Cruz, Natural Vibrations, Manoa DNA, Robi Kahakalau, Mailani Makainai, Taimane Gardner, Go Jimmy Go, Jerry Santos, the Gregg Hammer Band, Loretta Ables Sayre and the Kenny Endo taiko group. » The Hawaii Youth Symphony will host a benefit concert 4 p.m. April 10, at Blaisdell Concert Hall for Aloha for Japan/American Red Cross disaster relief efforts. In lieu of an admission fee, donations are requested. Themed "Collaborative Collage," the group’s Youth Symphony I will play with the Honolulu Symphony Chorus and pianist Michael Stewart of Utah, who recently received top honors at the Aloha International Piano Festival. World-class pianist Lisa Nakamichi will perform and speak about the devastation she witnessed in Japan. Honolulu Symphony Concertmaster Iggy Jang will be a guest violin soloist during the world premiere of "Liu-Si," written by Youth Symphony alumnus Michael Thomas-Foumai. » The Halekulani and Nobu Waikiki have joined to present the menus of three acclaimed chefs in a culinary benefit April 21 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. "For Japan — Culinary Artists for the Japan Relief Effort" will feature Halekulani Executive Chef Vikram Garg and chefs Nobu Matsuhisa and Yuji Wakiya. Garg will present a "Neo-Classic Indian Cuisine" menu, Matsuhisa "Japanese-Peruvian Cuisine," and Wakiya "Haute Chinese Cuisine." Donations are $95 per person, with all of the proceeds going to Aloha for Japan. For reservations, call 931-5040.
