Pool players advance to nationals

Five Oahu APA pool players have qualified for their respective national tournaments next month in Las Vegas.

Qualifying for the APA Jack & Jill 8-Ball Championship at the Riviera Hotel & Casino on April 27-29 are Team TNT, comprised of Tila Tauala and Norman Torres.

Winning the 8-Ball Hawaii regional were Ryo Yokawa, Glenda Aggasid and Ui’i Vita. Yokawa and Aggasid will compete in the April 28-30 event, while Vita, who has since been deployed by the military, will compete next year.

Team Piko undefeated in volleyball qualifier

Team Piko’s 14-under team went 9-0 to win the gold medal in the club division at last weekend’s Pacific Northwest girls volleyball qualifier in Spokane, Wash.

The team, called Ho’omau, did not drop a set in qualifying for this summer’s national tournament. Coached by Elisabeth Kadooka, members are Lynzi Ann Akeo, Reyn Akiu, Cassidy Apo, Karley Demello, McKenna Granato, Mariko Lau, Marissa Nakasone and Payton Spragling.

Team Piko’s 14-under Ho’oulu (9-1) finished third, losing to Vision Blue in the semifinals, then beating Ka Ulukoa (8-2) from Honolulu 25-7, 29-27 in the third-place match.

In 14-under open, Ka Ulukoa (8-1) finished third and Jammers (6-3) fourth.

In 16-under club, Ka Ulukoa (7-1) tied for fifth and Team Piko (6-2) was ninth in the 13-under club.
