Abercrombie seeks federal help for tsunami recovery

Gov. Neil Abercrombie is asking the federal government for help in recovering from this month’s tsunami.

Abercrombie signed a request Friday asking for a Presidential Disaster Declaration, which would provide federal funds to help pay for infrastructure damage.

Such a declaration would help Hawai’i County, Maui County, and the City and County of Honolulu to recover some of the costs to rebuild and repair damaged public buildings and harbors. Preliminary estimates for the damage totals $8.5 million.

On Thursday, the governor requested a disaster declaration from the U.S. Small Business Administration to help homeowners, renters, businesses affected by the tsunami that started off Japan and swept across the Pacific.
