Honolulu fire investigators could not determine what started a fire that caused $90,000 in damages to a townhouse in Aikahi Gardens today.

The fire began in an upstairs bedroom at 156 Noke St. about 9:45 a.m., said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig in a statement.

Fire companies extinguished the fire at 10:02 a.m.

The bedroom sustained heavy damage and parts of the two-story, three-bedroom townhouse had smoke and water damage.

Seelig said the residents limited damage to the structure by closing the bedroom doors before they left the home.

Closing doors helps contain fires and keeps them from spreading to other parts of the structure, Seelig said.

Three people who live in the home were away at the time and were receiving assistance from the Hawaii State Chapter of the American Red Cross.
