Big Island police have not ruled out foul play in the death of a 59-year-old Kona man who was found floating face down in Honokohau Harbor Saturday and are asking for the public’s help for more information.

Paddle boarders found the body of Franklin Lewis Smith floating within 100 yards of the harbor entrance about 6:50 a.m., police said. The paddle boarders brought Smith back to shore, where firefighters could not resuscitate him.

Smith had head and leg injuries. Officers found personal property on the cliff banks within the harbor that may have belonged to him.

Police have requested an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Detective Walter Ah Mow at 808-326-4646, extension 238.
