Police surveyed the scene of an accident in Moiliili yesterday in which a truck struck a bicyclist near the corner of University Avenue and South King Street.

Firefighters extricated an 86-year-old bicyclist who was pinned under a pickup truck in an accident yesterday afternoon in Moiliili.

The man was taken in critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center with head and body injuries, police said.

At 1:22 p.m. a 2006 white Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by a 61-year-old man pulled out of University Square at 2615 S. King St. to head mauka on University Avenue, police said.

The truck struck the bicyclist, who crossed in front of it, police said.

The bicyclist, on a white Huffy, was headed makai on the sidewalk on University Avenue.

Fire rescue personnel had to use hydraulic spreader tools to free the bicyclist.

He was treated at the scene, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, before he was taken to the hospital, said fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet, police said.

Police closed the mauka-bound lanes of University Avenue between King and Kuilei streets while they investigated the accident.
