TUCSON, Ariz. >> A state board is considering whether to hike the tuition of Arizona university students to record levels, increases that are well above the national average for tuition increases.

The Arizona Board of Regents discussed the proposed hikes at length Thursday, struggling to reach a consensus. They broke for lunch without a decision.

If the board approves what university presidents are asking for, tuition and fees at the University of Arizona in Tucson would increase by 22 percent for incoming in-state freshman undergraduates.

They would jump by 19.5 percent at Arizona State University in Tempe and by 15 percent for the Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.

Arizona universities say they’ve cut back where they can and blame the state Legislature’s steep cuts to their budgets.
