Hawaii’s pitching held Louisiana Tech to one run over a three-game series.

That was just enough to keep the Rainbow Wahine from sweeping the Lady Techsters.

UH clinched the Western Athletic Conference softball series with a 4-0 win in the first game of yesterday’s doubleheader in Ruston, La. LaTech, held scoreless over the first 19 innings of the series, pulled out a 1-0 victory in the finale.

Wahine left-hander Kaia Parnaby tied a career high with 12 strikeouts on her way to her fourth shutout of the season and right fielder Jenna Rodriguez provided offensive support with a two-run homer in the opening game.

Stephanie Ricketts, who tossed a one-hitter in UH’s 6-0 win on Friday, again handcuffed the Techsters in the second game until Kendra Harmon hit her first home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning to give LaTech its only run of the series.

LaTech’s Janna Frandrup, making her first start of the season, worked out of a jam in the top of the seventh to cap a complete-game victory.

"We’re still upbeat, knowing we won the series," Parnaby said. But she added dropping the last game was tough to deal with, "especially because it was a 1-0 game."

Ricketts (18-10) held LaTech to four hits, struck out five and walked one and lost a 1-0 decision for the third time this season.

Parnaby (11-3) also limited the Lady Techsters to four hits in yesterday’s opener. LaTech put runners on second and third in the first inning before Parnaby struck out the next two hitters to begin a streak of six straight K’s.

"It was feeling really good, everything was loose and (catcher) Sharla (Kliebenstein) called a great game, so it worked out well," Parnaby said.

UH scored in the second inning on Kelly Majam’s RBI single and Rodriguez hit her second home run of the series in the third. Sarah Robinson drove in another run with a double in the sixth.

In the second game, UH managed six hits off of Frandrup, who began the day with a 7.50 earned-run average, but left seven runners on base. After Harmon’s homer gave LaTech its first lead of the weekend, Dara Pagaduan and Alex Aguirre singled with one out in the top of the seventh. Majam then lined out to shortstop, and Aguirre was caught off first for a game-ending double play.
