The Coast Guard rescued an overdue boater Wednesday night with assistance from her cell phone company.

The Oahu woman was aboard a 19-foot ski boat four miles south of Kewalo Basin.

The boater’s husband contacted the Coast Guard after searching the area in a small recreational vessel. The husband had contacted her by cell phone, but lost communication at 6 p.m.

The Coast Guard contacted AT&T to identify the first cell tower used in the boater’s last call.

The Coast Guard used her last known location and employed its Search and Rescue Optimal Planning System to determine the boater’s likely position and determine a precise search pattern.

A 45-foot response boat was deployed to Kewalo Basin and searched using an infrared camera and illumination flares.

The rescue crew sighted the vessel at about 8:30 p.m. and found the woman safe.

The woman’s husband then towed the boat to safety.
