Police officer arrested after Kona Street crash

A Honolulu police officer was arrested early on suspicion of drunken driving after allegedly crashing into a utility pole on Kona Street early Friday.

William Suarez, 40, was booked on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.

Sources confirmed that Suarez is an officer assigned to the Waikiki district.

Suarez was arrested about 5:30 a.m. at the 1100 block of Kona Street and released that morning on $500 bail.

The Honolulu Police Department’s public information office did not return a call for comment.

Suarez was the second officer to be arrested for drunken driving in a year. Boyd Kamikawa struck a 61-year-old woman with a motor vehicle while driving drunk downtown last April 24. He pleaded no contest to negligent injury and drunken driving in February and will be sentenced in May.
