UH softball: Wahine edge New Mexico State 3-2 in 10 innings

Alex Aguirre looped a single into right field with the bases loaded in the 10th inning to give the Hawaii softball team a 3-2 victory over New Mexico State tonight.

With the win, the Rainbow Wahine (31-16, 9-7 Western Athletic Conference) snapped a four-game losing streak and clinched a spot in the upcoming WAC tournament.

New Mexico State (37-13, 14-2) saw its school-record 10-game winning streak end and now hold a one-game lead in the WAC standings over Boise State and Fresno State.

UH right-hander Stephanie Ricketts struck out 10 and walked six in a complete-game win. NMSU’s Alex Newman also went the distance in the loss.

UH took the lead in the second on Sharla Kliebenstein’s solo home run. The Wahine protected the lead going into the seventh when NMSU loaded the bases with two out. But an error on Kandis Jones’ grounder to second base allowed the tying run to score.

The Aggies took the lead in the eighth on Valerie Swedberg’s RBI single, and UH answered in the bottom of the inning when Jessica Iwata doubled to score Jasey Jensen from first.

After a scoreless ninth, Iwata led off the bottom of the 10th with a single and Jenna Rodriguez followed with another single to right. With one out, Kliebenstein was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Aguirre then looped a single over the drawn-in infield to score Iwata with the winning run.

The Wahine close the home schedule with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 4 p.m. at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
