State closes lobster and crab season for summer

Hawaii’s lobster and crab fisheries are due to close this weekend for the summer.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources says it will be illegal to take ula and ula papapa, or spiny and slipper lobsters, and Kona crab in state waters beginning tomorrow.

People may resume fishing for lobster and crab on Sept. 1.

Department head William Aila said in a statement Thursday the rules are in place to protect the species during the summer months when they are in the peak of their reproductive season.

The department is asking people to report any violation of these or other fishing regulations by calling the Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement at 643-DLNR.
