UH softball team sweeps New Mexico State

The Hawaii softball team scored in its final turn at bat in both games of today’s doubleheader against New Mexico State to close its home schedule with a sweep of the Aggies at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Alex Aguirre’s two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning powered the Rainbow Wahine to a 5-4 win in the opening game. The Wahine won the finale, again 5-4, on Jessica Iwata’s RBI single to left to score Jazmine Zamora from second with the decisive run.

UH senior Jenna Rodriguez earned the wins in both games on senior night. She threw two innings of scoreless relief in the first game and held the Aggies down over 1 1/3 innings in relief of Stephanie Ricketts in the second game.

New Mexico State hit three home runs in the first game and took a 4-3 lead on Ashley Maroda’s solo shot in the sixth inning. But Aguirre answered for UH with a two-run blast in the bottom of the inning to vault UH into the lead.

The Wahine built a 4-1 lead in the second game before Kapolei graduate Tehani Kaaihue tied the game with a three-run homer in the sixth.

UH put runners on first and second with two out in the bottom of the seventh and Iwata’s looper to left escaped the glove of NMSU shortstop Kylie Randall and Zamora beat the throw to the plate to score the winning run.

Iwata finished the day 4-for-6 at the plate, including a two-run homer in the first game, with five RBIs.

UH (33-16, 11-7 WAC) closes the regular season with a road trip to San Jose State next weekend.
