Maui jury convicts man of assaulting ex-Marine with pole

WAILUKU >> A Maui jury has convicted a man of felony assault for striking a retired Marine in the head with a 6-foot pole.

The Maui News reported today 55-year-old Wilfred Kin Choy Sr. was found guilty of second-degree assault.

Prosecutors say the January attack on retired Marine Victor Garcia was unprovoked.

Garcia testified he was walking along a sidewalk in South Kihei when he felt a sharp blow from behind, knocking him to the ground.

Kin Choy stood over him screaming obscenities.

Garcia says Kin Choy called him “haole.”

Kin Choy is scheduled to be sentenced next month.
