Punahou rolls into water polo semifinals
Miranda Estrella scored four goals to lead top-seeded Punahou to a 17-7 victory over Roosevelt in the quarterfinals of the Stanford Carr Development/HHSAA Girls Water Polo State Championships at Kamehameha-Hawaii on the Big Island.
The Buffanblu (9-0) will play No. 4-seeded Kamehameha-Hawaii (11-0) in a semifinal match at 6 p.m. today at the Hawaii Naeole Aquatics Facility.
No. 2-seeded Kahuku (15-0) plays Kamehameha (7-3) at 4:45 p.m. in the other semifinal.
Senior Brailey Hirose-Hulbert scored three goals as Punahou built a 7-0 first-quarter lead. It was 9-0 before Roosevelt broke through with a Kailiponi McGee goal midway through the second quarter. Rachel Kamai, who had 11 goals in the Rough Riders’ opener, was held scoreless by the Buffanblu.
Roosevelt (12-4) plays Mililani (12-4) in a consolation match today.
Kamehameha 17, Lahainaluna 4
Senior Kehau Ai scored six goals and junior Brittney Garrigan five as the Warriors throttled the No. 3-seeded Lunas, who lost for the first time in 11 matches this season.
Senior Gina-Bella Mata‘afa scored three goals to lead Lahainaluna.
Kahuku 11, Waiakea 3
Senior Brooke Roy scored four of her seven goals in the first quarter to power the Red Raiders over the Warriors.
Senior Aurora Caldera had two goals to lead Waiakea (6-6).
Kamehameha-Hawaii 19, Mililani 8
Senior Ryenn Lyons scored six goals and junior Kiana Krzyska five as the Warriors dominated the Trojans.
Kamehameha-Hawaii outscored Mililani 5-0 in the third quarter to build a 13-6 lead. Senior Molly McGuire led the Trojans with three goals.
Baldwin 9, Kapolei 4
Senior driver Alison King scored four goals as the Bears (7-5) beat the Hurricanes (8-8) in a consolation match. Freshman utility Kayla Lanier scored all four Kapolei goals.
