Another point guard is what Dana Takahara-Dias needed, and what she got.

The Hawaii women’s basketball team announced the signing of 5-foot-3 Alissa Campanero of The Bishop’s School in San Diego to play for the Rainbow Wahine in the 2011-12 season.

She averaged 16 points, 7.2 assists, 3.1 steals and 2.1 rebounds a game as a Knights senior.

She is the second point guard added for next season, after San Bernardino Valley College transfer Jasmine Ray. Adding depth at the position was a must because both of last season’s point guards, Keisha Kanekoa and Mai Ayabe, played their final year of eligibility.

Takahara-Dias, who is heading into her third year as coach, hailed Campanero for her athleticism, defensive ability and feel for the game.

"She is a very fundamental player, a little point guard that packs a big punch. I’m excited to have her for four years," Takahara-Dias said. "We were looking for a true point guard for a long time. She’s going to be looked on very early in her career to contribute."

She is the fifth new player signed for 2011-12, in addition to USC transfer Vicky Tagalicod, who joined the team midway through last season.

The Wahine still have one of their 15 scholarships open for next season. Takahara-Dias said the team might save it for the following year.

Rainbow Wahine camp next month

The 2011 University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Basketball Camp, featuring instruction from the UH coaches and current and former players, will take place June 10 to 12 at the Manoa Lower Campus.
