A Haiku woman was killed when the pickup truck she was in plunged 75 feet down a cliff off Kahekili Highway near Waihee Elementary School on Maui early this morning.

Maui police said Tiare Franco, 22, was ejected from a white 2005 Dodge pickup truck and pronounced dead at the scene following the 1:08 a.m. crash.

The incident occurred about 1.6 miles north of Oki Place in Waihee, police said. The truck was traveling north on Kahekili when it failed to negotiate a left curve and plunged off a steep embankment, police said.

Another occupant fled the scene. It is unclear who was driving. Speed, drugs or alcohol are being investigated as possible contributors to the crash.

The fatal was the fourth on Maui this year compared to seven at this time in 2010.
