Downed pole disrupts traffic on Kamehameha Highway

Traffic on Kamehameha Highway is being re-routed in both directions at Waihee Road this morning.

Police say crews need to fix a downed Hawaiian Telcom pole after a traffic accident at about 4:09 a.m. closed the highway.

Ann Nishida Frye, Hawaiian Telcom spokeswoman, said there was no interruption in phone service when the car hit a telephone pole and toppled it. She said the driver apparently abandoned the car and fled the scene of the accident.

Nishida Frye said one contraflow lane will be opened while crews replace the pole and re-attach fallen cables. Work is expected to take most of today.
