Number of hurricanes in waters around Hawaii expected to be below average

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center says the number of hurricanes in waters around Hawaii should be below average this year.

The center said Wednesday it expects two to four tropical cyclones to pass through central Pacific waters during the hurricane season, which begins June 1. Four to five pass through the region during an average year.

Tropical cyclones include hurricanes as well as less powerful tropical depressions and tropical storms.

The center said Wednesday there’s a 70 percent chance of a below average season and a 25 percent chance of a normal season.

The National Weather Service runs the center.
