Baby’s body found in suitcase in northwestern Pennsylvania
ERIE, Pa. >> The body of a baby has been found stuffed into a suitcase on a northwestern Pennsylvania street.
Authorities say Erie firefighters made the gruesome discovery Tuesday afternoon while responding to a home for an unrelated fire.
The Erie Times-News reports firefighters noticed a strong odor coming from a bag wrapped in a blanket. They opened the suitcase and immediately called police.
Deputy Coroner Dennis Suscheck says the extent of decomposition made it impossible to immediately determine the age or gender of the baby. He says the baby was clothed and a pink blanket was found in the bag.
Neighbors told the paper the suitcase had been spotted in a pile of garbage Monday but was washed down the street by heavy rains that night.
An autopsy is scheduled for today.
