Stop yields drug bust

A police stop for a defective tail light led to drug charges against two Waikoloa women.

Officers stopped a 2008 Jeep sport utility vehicle on Queen Kaahumanu Highway near Makala Street in Kailua-Kona at 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Police discovered that the driver, Samantha Moore, 22, of Waikoloa was wanted on a warrant for contempt of court.

After further investigation, police arrested Moore and her passenger, Gena Arter, 31, of Waikoloa on suspicion of promotion of a dangerous drug.

Vice officers obtained a search warrant for the Jeep and recovered 24.7 grams of methamphetamine, numerous prescription pills, various paraphernalia associated with drug distribution, a loaded .22-caliber rifle, an unloaded .357-caliber revolver and $206 in cash.

Detectives charged Moore on Tuesday with second-degree meth trafficking, second-degree promotion of dangerous drugs and various other drug and firearms offenses. Her bail was set at $147,000. Arter was charged with drug and firearms offenses. Her bail was set at $15,500.

Crowe, Rugg win honors

The Maui County Office on Aging has selected Jim Crowe, 78, and Adele Rugg, 66, as the county’s recipients of the 2011 Outstanding Older American Awards.

Crowe has mentored parolees through Maui Economic Opportunity’s reintegration program, ministered at Saint Rita’s church and served on the board of the Kula Community Association.

Rugg has raised money for the Maui Nurses Scholarship Foundation, served as president of the Kiwanis Club and sat on the Policy Advisory Board for Elder Affairs.
