Summer may be here, but Spring-like showers will be with us for the next few days, the National Weather Service says.

A weather system in the upper atmosphere is moving over the islands and will bring an increased chance of showers, and a slight chance of thundershowers, through Friday, forecasters say.

Tradewinds may blow showers over to the leeward side, especially in the morning and afternoon heating could create more showers as warm, moist air rises into the cold, unstable air in the upper atmosphere.

Forecasters say there is a slight chance of thunderstorms on the leeward side of the Big Island this afternoon and the chance of thunderstorms will increase over all islands Wednesday through Friday, when the weather system is predicted to move away from the islands.

The weather system is similar to the upper level cold front that brought thunder and lightning storms to Hawaii in early May.

But forecasters say breezy tradewinds blowing at about 20 mph should keep heavier thunderstorms from developing and remaining over one place.
