2 hurt, man arrested in hit-run

Police arrested a 25-year-old man in a hit-and-run crash Thursday morning near Ala Moana Center that sent two pedestrians — a man in a wheelchair and a woman — to the hospital.

Police said the crash happened at about 2:30 a.m. on Kona Street between Piikoi and Kona Iki streets. A white 2005 Toyota sedan in the makai lane on Kona Street went over the raised median and hit a 20-year-old man in a wheelchair and a woman, whose age was not known, who were on the mauka sidewalk, said Lt. David Nilsen of the police Traffic Division.

The man went to the hospital in critical condition but improved to serious condition, Nilsen said. The woman was in good condition.

Patrol officers stopped a Toyota sedan in the McCully area shortly after the crash and arrested the driver, Nilsen said. He was in custody on suspicion of leaving the scene of a serious accident and driving under the influence.

Brush fires burn at 2 Oahu locations

Honolulu firefighters battled brush fires at Makapuu and Kalaeloa on Thursday.

The first fire broke out at about 6:15 a.m. and burned about two acres at Alan Davis Beach below the Makapuu hiking trail parking lot, said Capt. Terry Seelig, a spokesman for the Fire Department. It was under control at about 7:15 a.m.

The fire was in an area near an old fishpond and not near any hydrants or roads, Seelig said. Firefighters had to hike in and bring their own portable water units to put out the blaze, he said.

Seelig said Kalanianaole Highway remained open as firefighters worked on the fire.

The other brush fire burned four to five acres off Nimitz Beach next to the Coast Guard Air Station in Kalaeloa a little before noon.

Honolulu and federal firefighters were dispatched to the fire at 11:26 a.m., Seelig said. It was reported under control about 12:22 p.m.
