A Hawaii-based military unit has sent several archaeological recovery and investigation teams to Micronesia, Wake Island, Germany and Belgium in search for Americans missing from World War II.

The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command said Monday that a specially trained team arrived in Yap — in the Federated States of Micronesia — this week for a month-long investigation of aircraft crash sites and burial sites of up to 30 servicemen.

JPAC, which is headquartered at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on Oahu, said the team plans to interview witnesses and conduct site surveys.

At Wake Island, another team is due to search for a possible mass grave site.

In Germany and Belgium, dozens of JPAC team members are due to excavate three aircraft crash sites to look for six missing Americans.
