A Maui police officer was charged Thursday with theft for failing to turn in a firearm to the police department that a member of the public had voluntarily turned over to him.
Sean Marzoeki, 32, who was a patrol officer in Kihei at the time of the incident, turned himself in at the Wailuku police station 11 a.m. Thursday.
Marzoeki was charged with two counts of first-degree theft and two counts of failure to acquire a firearm permit.
He was charged on the strength of a warrant of arrest and information charging.
Lt. Wayne Ibarra said the warrant was issued after an investigation revealed Marzoeki failed to submit the firearm that was voluntarily turned over to him a few months ago.
Ibarra said he did not have the details of exactly when and why the individual wanted to turn the firearm in to the police department.
Police released him on $5,000 bail.
The Maui Police Department has placed the 10-year police veteran on restricted duty. He joined the department Aug. 27, 2001.
Marzoeki is scheduled for arraignment and plea 8:30 a.m. July 7 in Circuit Court.
