Garibaldi to lead Royal State Insurance

John Garibaldi, the former vice chairman, president and CEO of Hawaii Superferry, has been named president of Royal State Insurance.

Garibaldi will oversee day-to-day operations for the Hawaii-based insurance carrier.

Before his role with the Superferry, Garibaldi served as president and CEO of Zephyr Insurance Co. Garibaldi also has held executive financial positions with Hawaiian Airlines, the Queen’s Health Systems and Aloha Airlines.

He serves on the board of directors for DTRIC Insurance and RSI.

Ala Moana Center adds new retailers

Ala Moana Center is adding four new retailers later this year in addition to two that recently opened.

The new stores are Jollibee, the largest fast-food chain in the Philippines; clothing designer Diane Von Furstenberg; Ecko Unltd, which offers a youth clothing line; and Tricked Out Accessories, which features accessories for mobile devices. Bath & Body Works and gift store Sand People recently opened at the center.

Family Programs gets $20,000 grant

Family Programs Hawaii has received a $20,000 grant from the First Hawaiian Bank Foundation.

The funds will be used to support Family Programs Hawaii’s 2011 Holiday Celebration for foster children and their families. Family Programs Hawaii provides a support network for children entering into foster care, living in foster care and making the transition out of foster care.

Conrad Black sent back to prison

CHICAGO » Conrad Black, once a media mogul whose newspaper empire spanned several continents, is headed back to prison after a federal judge ruled Friday that he had not served enough time for defrauding investors.

Judge Amy St. Eve sentenced Black to 31⁄2 years in prison after berating and then praising him. But prosecutors say he will be given credit for more than two years he already had served, meaning the 66-year-old will go back for a little more than a year.

As St. Eve announced the sentence with Black standing expressionless before her, his 70-year-old wife, Barbara Amiel, fainted on a wooden courtroom bench. As she sprawled across the laps of other spectators, medics rushed in to attend to her. In a 20-minute statement before he was sentenced, Black spoke confidently and philosophically, reciting poetry and maintaining he had been falsely accused. At no point did he apologize.

St. Eve had originally sentenced Black to 61⁄2 years in prison after he was convicted in 2007 of defrauding investors in Hollinger International Inc.

Communications Pacific has promoted Cindy McMillan to executive vice president. She will serve on the firm’s three-member executive team, joining Chief Executive Officer Kitty Lagareta and President Christina Kemmer. She joined CommPac in 2002.

Kuakini Health System has announced the following appointments:

» Cheryl Tanaka to manager of care management and medical social work. She has more than 30 years of experience at Kuakini.

» Frank Ward to manager of education services. He joined Kuakini in 2003 as a patient care coordinator and returned in 2006 as a casual part-time in-house supervisor.

The Hawaii Laborers’ Union has re-elected Peter A. Ganaban as business manager-secretary-treasurer for the Laborers’ International Union of North America, Local 368, to a new three-year term. Also elected are Alonso Oliver, president; Joby North III, vice president; Toni Figueroa, recording secretary; executive board Leimomi Johnson, Thomas K. Cathcart and James “Kimo” Drumgold; and auditors Mark Magusara, Mark Travalino, Pete Lindsey and Joseph Yaw.
