Lurline Will Arrive on Wednesday With 697 Passengers

With the largest passenger booking ever carried by a Matson ship in regular service, the Mariposa arrived at noon today inaugurating what promises to be a record tourist week.

The liner proceeded to Pier 11 from Los Angeles with 709 passengers, 270 of whom are disembarking in Honolulu. The others, 439, will sail this evening for the Antipodes.

Another record will be shattered Wednesday when the Lurline arrives from Los Angeles with 697 passengers, 17 more than she has ever carried previously. Her previous record of 680 passengers was established July 13, 1938.

The liner is expected to take out a near capacity booking when she sails for the coast Friday noon.

200 From Orient

Arriving from Yokohama with 280 landing passengers, the Asama Maru was due off port at 3 this afternoon and will remain in port until 10 Tuesday night when she will sail for San Francisco.

NYK offices have not been advised of passengers in transit from Japan to the American mainland. Because of the relatively large number of passengers leaving the liner here it is assumed that she is carrying a large through booking.

Other passenger activity this week will include arrival of the Kamakura Maru from San Francisco Thursday and the President Taft from the Orient Friday.

2,500 in Week

Although figures are not immediately available showing exact number of passengers on these ships, maritime agents estimate that if the liners arrive with average bookings the total number of passengers to visit this port during the week will be approximately 2,500.
