Hawaii Air Guard evacuates sick child from American Samoa

An 18-month-old boy has been hospitalized in critical but stable condition after the Hawaii Air National Guard evacuated him to Honolulu from American Samoa.

A crew from the 203rd Air Refueling Squadron completed the emergency aeromedical evacuation early Saturday.

The boy from Pago Pago was suffering from respiratory failure and needed immediate medical attention in Honolulu.

Lt. Col. Charles Anthony says the KC-135 Stratotanker was launched soon after the Hawaii Air National Guard got the call early Friday to travel 2,500 miles to American Samoa to pick up the boy.

Anthony says the evacuation took 14 hours, round-trip.

The boy was taken by ambulance from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam to Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children where he remained in critical but stable condition Monday.
