Suntanned University of Hawaii coeds who would like to wear bikinis in the University swimming pool yesterday staged a curve-in at the Diamond Head entrance of the pool.

The University prohibits bikinis in the pool. Lifeguard Bill Massey blocked the pool gate, preventing the girls from taking a swim.

"It doesn’t look good. Their shorts slide off when they hit the water," Gladys Yoshihara, pool attendant, said of bikini wearers.

The elevated University pool has large plates of glass on its underside so that visitors can see the swimmers from below.

"The boys have a good show downstairs," said Mrs. Yoshihara. "Four or five girls who have sneaked in wearing bikinis have lost their bottoms.

"We like the girls to look nice when they swim."

She said the University finally had to place the viewing windows off limits. "They were collecting there in groups of 10 to 20."

The girls, however, had a different reason.

"It’s impossible to lose your bottoms. I’ve gone body surfing in rough surf and never lost my bottoms," scoffed Susan Jarret, a senior protester.

"We don’t have any other kind of bathing suit," said Mary Neill, a University sophomore.

"A lot of girls at the dorms lie on the grass under hoses because it messes up their suntans to wear one-piece bathing suits."

"These bikinis are good compared to the ones you see on the beach," said Terrie McCaslin, a freshman who modeled her bikini for the pro-navel group.

"We had to go swimming in our clothes once, that caused more attention than our bikinis would."

The girls also protested some other pool rules. For example rule 12, which reads: "No Lovemaking."

The girls said that was ridiculous, who would want to make love at a public swimming pool?
