Darrel Wright sits with attorney Debra Loy in the courtroom of Circuit Judge Randal O. Lee to hear the verdict in his trial for the killing of his grandmother.

A 50-year-old Aiea Heights man who admitted to fatally beating his 85-year-old grandmother has been found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity.

A state judge handed down the verdict this morning in the second-degree murder trial of Darrel David Wright.

Wright called 911 on Dec. 16, 2009 to ask for police assistance, telling the operator he had just beaten up his grandmother.

Mary Sobrado died from her injuries Jan. 23, 2010.

Wright suffers from schizophrenia.

Circuit Judge Randal O. Lee found that at the time of the beating, Wright was not receiving the proper amount of medication for his condition.
