The state and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have agreed to work together to restore Kawainui marsh on Oahu’s Windward side and create habitat for endangered Hawaiian birds. 

The Department of Land and Natural Resources says the project will create nearly 40 acres of scenic open space, reduce runoff to coastal reefs, increase populations of endangered waterfowl, and remove invasive weeds from the marsh. 

The restoration would provide habitat for endangered waterfowl, including the Hawaiian coot, the Hawaiian stilt, the Hawaiian moorhen and the Hawaiian duck.

Department Director William Aila and the Honolulu district commander for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Lt. Col. Douglas Guttormsen, are due to sign a partnership agreement for the project today.
