Wie shoots 68 to survive cut

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland » Honolulu’s Michelle Wie bounced back from missing the cut last week to shoot a 68 Friday in the second round of the Women’s British Open to make the cut in the LPGA Tour’s final major of the year.

Wie began the second round tied for 75th and in danger of going home early in back-to-back women’s golf events for the first time this year. In her last three tournaments, Wie tied for 72nd, tied for 55th and missed the cut at the Evian Masters last week.

Friday, she carded six birdies and two bogeys en route to finishing in a tie for 38th through the opening 36 holes. She trails leader Caroline Masson by nine shots. Masson shot a 7-under 65 Friday to move to 11-under 133.

Browne leads Senior Open

Olin Browne followed a record-tying 64 with a solid 69 to take a one-shot lead in the rain-delayed second round of the U.S. Senior Open in Toledo, Ohio.

Browne, who led by two strokes after matching the tournament’s low first-round score, had a double-bogey and a bogey but added five birdies — including on the two closing par 4s. He is at 9-under 133.

De Jonge, Simpson lead Greenbrier Classic

Brendon de Jonge shot a 3-under 67 and Webb Simpson had a 68 to share the lead at 7 under midway through the Greenbrier Classic in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.

Among those failing to advance to weekend play were Phil Mickelson and defending champion Stuart Appleby. Both finished 3 over, missing the cut by two strokes.

British Open champ misses Irish Open cut

Germany’s Marcel Siem eagled the 16th hole and took the second-round lead at 10-under 132.
