Former school employee charged in first ‘sexting’ case here
An Oahu grand jury has indicted a former Department of Education teaching assistant in the first so-called “sexting” case in Hawaii to result in the filing of criminal charges, Honolulu Prosecutor Keith Kaneshiro announced today.
Cody M. Onizuka, 25, was charged today with third-degree promotion of child abuse and violating a restraining order.
The indictment alleges that in early 2010, Onizuka tried to establish an intimate and sexual relationship with a 12-year-old female student at Niu Valley Middle School. Onizuka convinced the girl to take nude photographs of herself with a cell phone and to transmit the images to him via text messaging, the prosecutor’s office said in a news release.
