Report shows 14,000 Hawaii children affected by foreclosures

One in 10 children in Hawaii had a parent who was unemployed last year and 14,000 children have been affected by foreclosure during the last three years of the economic downturn, according to a new report from the University of Hawaii Center on the Family.

The center compiles information for the annual Kids Count report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, which advocates for a better future for children from disadvantaged families.

“If families are at risk of losing their homes, of course that’s going to affect kids,” said Ivette Rodriguez Stern, the Hawaii Kids count director. “Parents are stressed out and that affects the family.”
