Hawaii man gets 20-year sentence for fatal stabbing, but may serve only 2

KAILUA-KONA >> A 62-year-old Big Island man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in a fatal stabbing.

Gene Craig Wells was sentenced after pleading no contest to manslaughter and third-degree assault, West Hawaii Today reported Friday. Edward Wanat was killed in the November altercation at a Kona condominium. His son, Andrew Wanat, was injured.

Second-degree murder and second-degree assault charges were reduced as part of a plea deal that includes the provision that prosecutors recommend Wells be released after serving two years.

According to police, the elder Wanat was stabbed in the chest and abdomen while his son was stabbed in the arms, hands, shoulder and face.
