Several hundred police officers wearing white gloves gave a final salute to fallen officer Eric Fontes as a procession, including the hearse carrying his coffin, drove by the Honolulu Police Department Headquarters on Beretania Street this morning.
As the motorcade from Borthwick Mortuary approached, a dispatcher radioed out on all district channels and frequencies "Officer Fontes, what is your 10-20 (location)?" His commander then responded over the radio that he was 10-1, police code for "end of watch."
Fontes, 45, was killed when he was struck by a pickup truck along the shoulder of Farrington Highway on Sept. 13.
He will be buried Saturday on Molokai, where he was born and raised. His funeral on Oahu was held Friday.
Motorcycle officers escorted the six-car procession, which included a car carrying Police Chief Louis Kealoha.
Police stopped traffic for several minutes along Beretania Street for the brief ceremony.
