Kahuku beats Leilehua to advance to OIA Red title game

Kekahu Aluli made a 38-yard field goal for what proved to be the game-winning score as Kahuku defeated Leilehua 9-7 in the first game of the OIA Red playoff semifinals Friday night at Aloha Stadium.

The Red Raiders (9-1) will play the winner of the second game between Campbell and Farrington next week.

Tyler Taumua has 116 rushing yards and a touchdown at the half as the Govs lead the Sabers 21-12.

The Mules (8-1-1) will face the loser next week for the OIA’s third and final berth in the Division I state tournament.

Kahuku quarterback Viliami Livai threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Mikeli Fiso on the final play of the first half to give the Red Raiders a 6-0 lead.

Aluli’s field goal with 4:01 remaining gave Kahuku a 9-0 lead.

Leilehua answered with a 53-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kenan Sadanaga to Russell Siavii to cut the Red Raiders lead to 9-7 with 2:43 left in the third quarter.

Leilehua got the ball back on its own 8 with less than 3 minutes remaining and drove into Kahuku territory before linebacker Johnny Tapusoa broke up Sadanaga’s pass on fourth down.

Aofaga Wily rushed for 138 yards on 16 carries in the first half to lead the Red Raiders.

Leilehua and Kahuku had combined to win the last seven OIA Red playoff titles before Miilani won in 2010.
