About 14,700 gallons of diesel fuel spilled in Hilo
Operator miscalculation caused a diesel fuel spill of an estimated 14,700 gallons Tuesday morning at a Hilo fuel tank farm, the Hawaii County Fire Department said.
Aloha Petroleum Inc. reported the accident to the Department of Health, which is investigating the spill.
The fuel was confined to a spill containment area at the company’s east terminal in Hilo near Hilo Harbor.
No diesel fuel spilled into the harbor, a spokeswoman for Aloha Petroleum said.
The fuel was being piped from a barge at Pier 3 into a storage tank.
The Health Department’s Hazardous Evaluation and Emergency Response office coordinator is also investigating the incident.
