National Guard identifies soldier who died on Kauai
The Hawaii National Guard has identified a soldier who died on Kauai as Sgt. 1st Class Eric Yasuji Fujiwara, 54.
The Guard said in a statement Thursday that the light-wheeled vehicle mechanic died while on duty at a vehicle maintenance shop in Hanapepe.
Fujiwara had just finished some physical training and was wearing his workout clothes when a fellow soldier found him unresponsive on Wednesday.
Soldiers performed CPR, and Fujiwara was taken to Kauai Memorial Veterans Memorial Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 1 p.m.
The Guard said it’s not clear what caused his death.
Fujiwara served with the Guard for 37 years. He deployed twice with the 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team — once to Iraq and once to Kuwait.
