The Coast Guard has suspended its search for missing surfer Robert Rumburg pending any further developments.

Rumburg, 51, from Arvada, Colo., was reported missing in the vicinity of Sunset Beach on Wednesday evening. His board was recovered near Rocky Point.

“I would like to pass along our deepest sympathies to the Rumburg family,” Coast Guard Cmdr. Steven Wheeler, Sector Honolulu search and rescue mission coordinator, said in a new release issued today. “The decision to suspend is never easily made. We’ve taken all of our search data, including the probability of survival, and ultimately made the difficult decision to suspend, pending any new developments.”

The Coast Guard search spanned 10 miles west of Kaena Point to 29 miles east of Kahuku Point, extending offshore by about 40 miles. The total search area was 3,155 miles.

Involved in the search were a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, a Coast Guard Auxiliary airplane, an HC-130 Hercules airplane and the Coast Guard cutter Ahi. The Honolulu Fire Department also assisted in the search, using a rescue boat, helicopter, jet ski, divers and shoreline personnel.

While the search has been suspended, the Coast Guard still encourages anyone with information about Rumburg to contact the Sector Honolulu command center at 842-2600.
