City trying to curb wild pigs at Kaneohe botanical park
Honolulu officials are trying to control a wild pig problem at a Windward Oahu botanical park.
City Parks Director Gary Cabato says 225 pigs have been caught in the past two years with box traps at Hoomaluhia Botanical Park in Kaneohe.
KITV reported Wednesday the city has renewed an animal control contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Cabato says trapping is necessary to protect the public, parks staff and plants. He says pig hunting wouldn’t be prudent because of camping at the park on weekends.
The box traps are set in areas away from where the public visits.
Other Oahu botanical gardens are experiencing wild animal problems. The Koko Head park has a peacock problem and there are feral chickens at the Wahiawa botanical gardens.
